Sirius Web Design and Hosting has incorporated several best-in-class technology solutions by partnering with major solution providers to ensure that your site stays up and running on the Internet continuously without interruption.

Our servers run on Apache, the perfect example of rock solid, dependable back end service, and the undisputed king of Internet servers. Apache drives most of the world's web sites, and is well known as
the engine of the World Wide Web. Apache is the most successful open source application ever, with more than 70 percent market share. Microsoft Internet Information Server is a far distant second, with about 20 percent. Apache's reliable back end service is one of your most reliable partners in support of your mission critical web site, and is rarely affected by bugs or security problems like Microsoft IIS. Apache just works quietly in the background running most of the web sites in the world.

Service and Support
All web hosting includes 24/7 tech support. Servers are based on Intel architecture including Bonavio, VA Linux, and Intel White boxes with entirely Cisco switch network. Standard servers maintain 500 IP addresses recommended up to 1,000 IPs, while larger servers maintain 1,000 IP addresses recommended up to 1,500 IPs.

Automated Security Monitoring
To ensure the integrity of your web site, system administration proactively monitors system processes on each server as well as across the entire network. Security software constantly monitors, reports, and fixes system processes. Functionality includes ping the server every two minutes, ping the http daemon, monitor server uptime, web page performance, disk space and quota warnings, scan automated firewall security, provide automated staff notification, and conduct nightly incremental and full backups. These monitoring programs are designed to halt and report all intrusions to the system and provide you with the peace of mind you need to conduct secure business transactions from your servers, with 99.5% uptime guaranteed.

Firewall Protection
A firewall is a security device that secures a server from possible attack. It is placed between the server and the Internet to monitor and document requests for data access according to a predefined set of security policies. Each server is equipped with a firewall managed by security engineers with years of telecommunications cryptography experience. The entire network is also secured through a circuit level firewall that provides an additional level of security for your mission-critical data.

Server Network Connected to Three Tier One Internet Backbones
All servers are constantly OnNet with Global Center, Qwest Communications, and Genuity, a division of GTE, through three separate bandwidth-on-demand connections inside the same building as the network operations center.

Global Center is a Tier One provider with a 13,000-mile fiber optic network and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology providing an enormous 460 gigabytes per second (Gbps) of capacity worldwide. Global Center, a multinational global telecommunications company built from the ground up with best in class undersea telecommunications gear and capacity to burn, has an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) fiber node located inside the network operations center building.

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing is an optical technology used to increase bandwidth over existing fiber optic backbones. DWDM works by combining and transmitting multiple signals simultaneously at different wavelengths on the same fiber. In effect, one fiber is transformed into multiple virtual fibers. So, if you were to multiplex eight OC -48 signals into one fiber, you would increase the carrying capacity of that fiber from 2.5 Gb/s to 20 Gb/s. Currently, because of DWDM, single fibers have been able to transmit data at speeds up to 400Gb/s. And, as vendors add more channels to each fiber, terabit capacity is on its way.

A key advantage to DWDM is that it's protocol and bit-rate independent. DWDM-based networks can transmit data in IP, ATM, SONET /SDH, and Ethernet, and handle bit-rates between 100 Mb/s and 2.5 Gb/s. Therefore, DWDM-based networks can carry different types of traffic at different speeds over an optical channel.

From a QoS (Quality of Service) stand point, DWDM-based networks create a lower cost way to quickly respond to customers' bandwidth demands and protocol changes.

Qwest Communications, another Tier One global fiber-optic empire, comes into the network operations center with an OC-12 line and plans to upgrade their connection to an OC-48 in the near future. Qwest also has an ATM fiber node inside the same building as the network operations center. The Qwest connection enables redundancy and enhanced routes to Europe, Latin America and Asia, offering up to 150,000 possible paths to send each packet of traffic.

Genuity, a division of GTE, is the third Tier One communications powerhouse focused on data and the Internet with a point of presence inside the network operations center building. Genuity provides excellent network performance as a result of their high-speed peering arrangements with other Tier One Internet backbone providers. The GTE global network delivers customers directly onto the Internet via a high-speed connection to its private, super-capacity backbone, including 17,000 miles of fiber and OC192 capacity. It is comprised of more than 800 U.S. local access points and approximately 1,500 international local access points in more than 150 countries.

Because of the direct network connections with these three Tier One providers, no servers link to the Internet though an OC3 or T3 Telecom circuit. Instead, independent cables run directly from the network operations center to all three carriers' points of presence inside the same building. These lines can handle the bandwidth of a T3 or an OC3 with DWDM, and they handle several times the bandwidth of an OC3. The scalability to meet your requirements is directly available to you, no matter what your bandwidth needs may be.

Intelligent end-user routing software called Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) connects the server network with Global Center, Qwest, and GTE resources. BGP identifies the most efficient path for each data packet and sends the information to its destination on that path. This increases the speed at which web pages are sent from the server network to their destinations.

Border Gateway Protocol is an Internet protocol that enables groups of routers (called autonomous systems) to share routing information so that efficient, loop-free routes can be established. BGP is commonly used within and between Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The protocol is defined in RFC 1771.

State of the Art Network Operations Center
The network operations center is located in a secure, monitored, class A building with a minimum number of approved personnel allowed access to highly sensitive areas and equipment. The command center is controlled via automatic doors to further secure and protect the equipment, and a detailed record of employee and visitor entry is maintained at all times.

The network operations center features raised flooring that enables a constant flow of conditioned air and helps to maintain uniform room temperature at all times. Raised flooring also reduces static and ensures a professional, computer-grade environment for your servers. The network operations center is also equipped with a Raytheon fire suppression system, designed to immediately extinguish fire and protect equipment and personnel.

Uninterruptible Power System
Two Liebert industrial grade, three phase uninterruptible power systems protect against local power failures. These Liebert UPS systems act as back-up batteries, maintaining uninterrupted power in case of power surges and outages. If power were to fail, servers would continue running with power from the backup power system. Alarms would alert technicians who would quickly restore redundancy. Servers and client sites would experience no downtime. The Liebert UPS backup system keeps the network servers up and running indefinitely without relying on external power.

Force Filtered Cooling
All servers are equipped with a positive pressure, filtered air system. Four large fans pull filtered air into each server's protective case, and the components within are cooled by fans that circulate the purified air. This constant introduction of clean air into the case creates a positive pressure environment ensuring that dust remains outside the server.

Industrial-Grade Air Conditioners
Two Liebert ten ton industrial air conditioners cool the network operations center to an optimal temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the interior working spaces.

Standby Servers
Standby servers of all CPU configurations are always online. If a server were to experience a hardware failure, a key would be turned, and the data drive would be pulled and inserted it into an identical standby server. The second server would be rebooted, and all your data would be up and running again in a matter of minutes.

Exceptional Performance and Reliability
According to industry analysis, telephone circuit failure affecting Internet Service Providers is responsible for 70% of downtime lasting over ten hours. Since all network servers are in the same building as Global Center, Qwest and GTE, there is a direct cable connection between your servers and these Tier One providers. Telephone circuit failure is eliminated because of this direct connection between your Cisco network routers and theirs. Global Center, Qwest, and GTE also have peering connections with other major Tier One providers so that traffic can be switched to alternate backbones as needed.

Being OnNet with Global Center, Qwest, and GTE allows the sharing of their superb digital distribution architecture. If one provider experiences a delay, data is sent through another provider. This includes private peering connections with major Internet carriers such as MCI, Sprint, UUNET, EUNET, AT&T, AOL, Best, Erols, @Home, IBM Advantis and others. Such private peering arrangements allow the server network to exchange packets of data with every major backbone carrier on the Internet.

Outside the network operations center, AT&T Managed Internet Service provides reliable, dedicated, high-speed Internet connections and industry-leading Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Your business IP services reside on AT&T's world-class OC-192/OC-48 IP backbone, providing you with managed, state-of-the-art hardware and software, smart routing capability, and continuous performance monitoring. In addition, Global Center provides high-speed links to eight public exchanges including MAE East, MAE West, and several NAPS to ensure that your data is moved as quickly and efficiently as possible on the Internet.
